Tech jobs in Lisbon: the scene in 2027

Lisbon has grown into one of Southern Europe's main tech cities over the past decade. International companies have opened engineering offices here, Portuguese scale-ups have grown up here, and the city hosts large tech events such as Web Summit every year.

For engineers, that mix creates choice. You can join a global company's local team, a fast-growing Portuguese product company, a consultancy, or a nearshore team that works for clients across Europe.

The market is also small and competitive. According to the ITDS Portugal team, demand for engineers has grown over the past year, and companies compete hard for senior people. For candidates, that is good news. For employers, it means good engineers rarely stay on the market for long.

Where the tech jobs in Lisbon are: hubs and employers

Tech employers cluster in a few parts of the Lisbon area. Each has a different feel.

AreaWhat you find thereGood to know
Parque das NaçõesModern offices, corporate tech teams and the city's startup programmeClose to the airport and the Oriente station
Marvila and BeatoConverted warehouses and creative hubs, home to startups and studiosA former industrial area on the riverside, still changing fast
Avenidas Novas and SaldanhaCentral office blocks with consultancies and international companiesEasy to reach by metro from most of the city
Cais do Sodré and the centreCoworking spaces and smaller product companiesLively, central and expensive to live in
Oeiras (Taguspark, Lagoas Park)Business parks with large tech and corporate employersWest of the city, on the train line towards Cascais

Among the well-known names with engineering teams in or near Lisbon are Portuguese tech companies such as OutSystems and Talkdesk, and international companies such as Mercedes-Benz.io, Volkswagen Digital Solutions and Cloudflare. Many more hire through consultancies and nearshore partners, which is why a single agency can give you access to several teams at once.

Commuting is part of the choice. Many Lisbon roles are hybrid, so it pays to live near a metro or train line that reaches your office in one connection. A short commute two days a week makes a hybrid role far easier to live with than a long one.

English-speaking tech jobs in Lisbon

Most international tech teams in Lisbon work in English. That includes engineering, product and much of the support around them. Portuguese helps in daily life and with some local employers, but many engineers here work entirely in English.

A second foreign language can set you apart. The ITDS Portugal team says the hardest roles to fill right now are functional roles that also need French. German and Spanish are useful too, because many Lisbon teams work for clients across Europe.

The stacks clients ask ITDS for most often in Portugal include full-stack Java and Angular, .NET, application support and business analysis. If you have one of those profiles and a second language, put both in the first line of your CV.

Pay and cost of living in Lisbon

What shapes your pay

Lisbon generally pays more than the rest of Portugal for the same role. Even so, your offer depends on who pays you, your contract, your languages and your seniority.

Foreign employers often pay more than local ones. An employment salary in Portugal is usually paid in fourteen instalments a year, while a freelance rate has to cover your own social security, holidays and quiet months. So compare yearly net income, not monthly figures, and ask every recruiter for the gross annual amount, the number of payments and the benefits.

Living costs

Housing is the biggest cost in Lisbon, and rents in the centre have risen sharply over the past decade. Food, public transport and everyday services remain more affordable than in most Western European capitals. Before you accept an offer, look up current rents in the areas you are considering, because they vary widely by neighbourhood.

Where tech workers live

Many engineers choose areas with good metro or train links rather than the most central streets:

  • Arroios and Alvalade. Residential, central and well connected by metro, with a local feel.
  • Campo de Ourique. A quieter neighbourhood with its own shops and market, popular with families.
  • Parque das Nações. Modern flats close to many tech offices, with a riverside setting.
  • Almada. Across the river, reached by ferry or train, and usually cheaper than central Lisbon.
  • Oeiras and the Cascais line. Near the business parks and the beach, with direct trains into the city.

How to get hired for tech jobs in Lisbon

The basics work everywhere, but a few things matter more in Lisbon's small market.

  1. Lead with your strongest combination. Stack, seniority and languages in the first two lines of your CV.
  2. Ask who the employer is. Many roles come through agencies and partners. Make sure you know who signs your contract and who you will work for every day.
  3. Check the working model. Fully remote, hybrid or office-based. Ask how many days a week the team meets.
  4. Compare offers like for like. Contract type, gross annual pay, number of payments and benefits.
  5. Use your network. Lisbon's tech community is close-knit, and meetups are a good way to hear about roles early.

If you are moving to Lisbon from abroad, start the paperwork early. You will need a Portuguese tax number (NIF) and a social security number (NISS) to be employed, and most landlords and banks will ask for the NIF too. EU citizens can live and work in Portugal freely, while others need the right visa or residence permit first. Rules and processes change, so check the official requirements before you sign a lease or an offer.

At ITDS, the process is short. You apply or send your CV, talk to a recruiter, take a technical interview with a specialist in your stack, meet the client team and receive a clear offer. Our projects usually run for a year or longer, and we stay in touch once you start.
