You need a senior engineer, and your own hiring has stalled. Now you are looking at IT staff augmentation companies, and every search result is a "top 25" list written by one of the companies on it, with itself at number one.
This guide does something different. It compares 20 IT staff augmentation companies by the job each one does best, names the trade-offs, and puts ITDS where we genuinely fit, which is not first on every count. Staff augmentation means adding external engineers to your own team, under your technical lead, for as long as you need them. If you want to see how we run it, our page on IT staff augmentation from Poland and Portugal explains the process.

How we compared these IT staff augmentation companies
Most rankings give each company a score. We don't, because we have not audited our competitors' delivery, and a score would pretend we had. Instead, we grouped the 20 by the kind of buyer they serve best and judged each one on five things.
- Seniority. Can they reliably supply senior engineers, or mostly mid-level capacity?
- Speed. How long from your request to an engineer working in your team?
- Compliance. Are engineers employed under EU rules, with GDPR handled by default?
- Reviews. What do public client reviews say on sites such as Clutch?
- Geography. How many working hours do their engineers share with you?
All descriptions come from the companies' public materials and our knowledge of the market. Check each provider yourself before you sign, and treat their claims, and ours, as starting points.

The 20 best IT staff augmentation companies for 2027, by type
Global engineering firms
These companies run thousands of engineers across many countries. They suit large programmes where scale and process matter more than speed on a single role.
Based: Newtown, Pennsylvania, with delivery across Europe, Central Asia, India and the Americas. Suits: enterprises running large, multi-year programmes. Strengths: depth across almost every stack and industry. Watch-outs: staff augmentation sits inside a broader consulting business, so small requests may not get priority.
Based: Luxembourg, founded in Argentina, with a large Latin American workforce. Suits: US companies that want scale in American time zones. Strengths: design, digital and AI studios alongside engineering. Watch-outs: the model leans towards projects and studios more than single-engineer augmentation.
Based: London, with delivery centres in Southeast Europe, Latin America and India. Suits: UK and European enterprises, including financial services. Strengths: strong enterprise governance and European delivery. Watch-outs: enterprise process and pricing can be heavy for one or two engineers.
Based: founded in Lviv, now headquartered in Austin, Texas. Suits: large cloud and modernisation programmes. Strengths: a large engineering base and long track record. Watch-outs: ask where your engineers will sit and how the company plans for continuity.
Based: founded in Ukraine, with delivery centres across Central and Eastern Europe. Suits: companies building mid-sized to large teams in the region. Strengths: broad stack coverage and dedicated-team experience. Watch-outs: as with any provider with a large Ukrainian base, confirm the continuity plan.
Talent marketplaces and networks
These platforms match you with individual engineers, often within days. You usually manage the engineer directly.
Based: a fully remote company with a global freelance network. Suits: teams that need one experienced freelancer quickly. Strengths: speed and a selective screening process. Watch-outs: engineers are freelancers, so check continuity, time zone and, in Europe, how the contract treats employment status.
Based: New York, with a talent marketplace spanning more than 135 countries and deep roots in Africa. Suits: companies hiring remote engineers at volume. Strengths: a very large talent pool and its own assessment tools. Watch-outs: shared working hours depend on where each engineer lives.
Based: Palo Alto, California, with remote developers worldwide. Suits: companies comfortable with platform-led matching. Strengths: a large pool and automated vetting. Watch-outs: check how much human support you get after the match, and in which time zones.
Latin American nearshore for US teams
Based: a large engineering workforce across Latin America. Suits: US companies that want engineers working US hours. Strengths: scale and full overlap with American time zones. Watch-outs: for a European buyer, the time-zone advantage turns into a gap.
Polish IT staff augmentation companies
Poland is the largest engineering market in Central Europe and one hour ahead of London. These firms suit European buyers who want EU-based teams.
Based: offices across Poland, part of the French Sii Group. Suits: large teams across many technologies. Strengths: one of the biggest engineering providers in the country. Watch-outs: a scale business, so niche senior roles may take longer.
Based: Poznań, with delivery centres in Poland and Mexico. Suits: Python, data and AI work. Strengths: one of Europe's best-known Python specialists, with about two decades in the field. Watch-outs: the focus is the Python and data ecosystem, so other stacks are not the core offer.
Based: Poznań. Suits: product companies that want design and engineering together. Strengths: product thinking and a well-known brand. Watch-outs: it works more like a product agency than a pure augmentation partner.
Based: Kraków, with teams in Poland and other European countries. Suits: companies that want team extension from Poland. Strengths: experience with long-running engineering teams. Watch-outs: ask how senior the proposed engineers are, as you should with any provider.
Based: Warsaw. Suits: smaller product teams, including fintech. Strengths: a software-house approach with product focus. Watch-outs: a smaller bench limits how fast it can scale to large teams.
Based: Gliwice. Suits: long-term teams that also want consulting. Strengths: a long track record and a mature delivery process. Watch-outs: the consulting layer can be more than you need for a single engineer.
Portuguese IT staff augmentation companies
Portugal shares a time zone with London, and many engineers also work in French or Spanish. The market is smaller than Poland's, and the competition for senior talent is strong.
Based: Lisbon. Suits: European tech companies that want Portuguese engineers. Strengths: a dedicated staffing model, with each consultant supported by a people-experience partner. Watch-outs: Portugal-only delivery, so very large teams may take time.
Based: Lisbon and Porto, with a team in Rio de Janeiro. Suits: companies that want a nearshore team in Portugal. Strengths: engineering-led culture and team extension experience. Watch-outs: confirm which engineers sit in Portugal and which in Brazil, since the time zones differ.
Based: founded in Ukraine, with a delivery centre in Porto and a workspace in Lisbon. Suits: larger teams that want a Portuguese option. Strengths: the scale of a large firm with a local Portuguese hub. Watch-outs: ask where your specific engineers will be based.
Based: Lisbon and Porto. Suits: companies that want IT staffing and managed services in Portugal. Strengths: local presence in both main tech cities. Watch-outs: check senior availability for your stack, given how tight the Portuguese market is.
The boutique senior option
Based: Warsaw, Lisbon and New York, part of House of HR. Suits: engineering leaders who need senior engineers they can't find at home, employed under EU rules. Strengths: senior-only shortlists, about 20 days on average from search to an integrated engineer, and both Polish and Portuguese talent pools. Watch-outs: we are a boutique, so if you need a hundred engineers next month, a global firm is the better fit.

Where ITDS sits, and why
We put ourselves last in the list on purpose. Being last is not a confession, and it is not modesty either. It is the honest place for a company of our size.
Global firms win on scale. Marketplaces win on speed for single freelancers. Our strength is the hard senior role: the engineer your own recruiters could not find, who needs to work in European hours and sit under EU employment and data protection rules from day one.
Roughly one in five candidates passes our vetting. We draw on teams in Poland, for scale and stack depth, and in Portugal, for UK hours and languages such as French. On average, a client goes from starting a search to an integrated engineer in about 20 days.
When staff augmentation is the wrong choice
Staff augmentation works when you have a strong technical lead and a clear gap in the team. It works less well in three situations.
First, when nobody on your side can direct the work. Augmented engineers follow your lead, so without one, they will wait or guess. In that case, a dedicated team with its own lead, or a project partner who owns delivery, is usually a better fit.
Second, when the work is short and fully specified. If you can write down the scope and the finish line today, a fixed project may cost less effort to manage than adding people to your team.
Third, when you really need a permanent employee in your own country. Some roles, such as a head of engineering who will build your culture, belong on your own payroll. A good staff augmentation company should tell you so, even if it means losing the deal.
If none of these apply, staff augmentation is often the fastest way to close a skills gap without a long local hiring process.
How to choose between IT staff augmentation companies: a five-question filter
Before you shortlist, answer these five questions. They will remove most of the list for you.
- How many engineers do you need? One to five points to boutiques, marketplaces and software houses. Fifty or more points to global firms.
- How senior must they be? If the role is hard and senior, ask each provider how many senior engineers they placed in your stack last year.
- Which hours must they share with you? European teams should favour Poland and Portugal. US teams should weigh Latin America against the morning overlap with Europe.
- Who employs the engineer? Freelancers, local employees and contractors carry different legal and continuity risks. This is general information, so check the details with your own adviser.
- What happens if it doesn't work out? Ask what replacement cover the contract includes and how fast it applies.
FAQ on IT staff augmentation companies
IT staff augmentation means adding external engineers to your own team for a defined period. They work under your technical lead, in your tools and processes, while the provider handles hiring, employment and replacement.
It depends on the stack, the seniority, the country and the contract. Rates in Central Europe and Portugal usually sit below US and Western European rates and above the main offshore markets. Ask each provider for a written rate card and confirm current rates before you budget.
Nearshore engineers work in a nearby country, within about two hours of your time zone, so they share most of your working day. Offshore engineers sit further away, often with lower rates but little daily overlap.
Marketplaces can often introduce freelancers within days. For a vetted senior engineer who joins as a long-term team member, expect a few weeks. At ITDS, the average from starting a search to an integrated engineer is about 20 days.
Read public reviews, ask for references in your industry, interview the proposed engineers yourself and read the replacement and notice terms in the contract. Ask who employs the engineer and where your data will be processed.
